CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Parker Haskin | C | Elon

So. - Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Benjamin School

Haskin batted .556 (5-9) with a double and five RBI’s as Elon won two-of-three last week. The sophomore catcher had a hit in all three games, including going 3-for-5 and driving in four in Sunday’s 13-6 triumph over UNCG. He also had an RBI in a setback to No. 3 Notre Dame and was 1-for-3 with a run scored in Saturday’s 4-3 win over the Spartans.

CAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Wyatt Scotti | RHP | Northeastern

So. - Barnstable, Mass./St. Mark’s

Scotti allowed five hits and two earned runs over 7.1 innings and struck out career-high 11 as Northeastern handed No. 18 Clemson its first loss with a 5-3 victory on Sunday. The right-hander gave up just an unearned run over the first six innings as NU built a 5-1 advantage and recorded at least one strikeout in all eight frames. Scotti improved to 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA for the season.

CAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Cyle Phelan | LHP | UNCW

Fr. - Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Fuquay-Varina

Phelan fired 6.0 shutout innings and struck out seven over a pair of relief appearances against defending Big South champ Campbell and Kennesaw State. The left-hander gave up just one hit and fanned four in three frames at Campbell and surrendered two hits in three innings and struck out four to help secure a 2-1 victory over KSU. Phelan lowered his ERA to 1.80 for the year.

CONFERENCE NOTES:

NORTHEASTERN HANDS CLEMSON ITS FIRST LOSS: Northeastern continued its success against nationally ranked ACC teams, beating No. 18 Clemson, 5-3, on Sunday. The Tigers came into the game with a 14-0 record. The Huskies’ win at Clemson came a week after completing a three-game sweep at No. 4 NC State.

IMPRESSIVE SLATE OF NON-CONFERENCE GAMES: CAA teams will face an impressive slate of non-conference opponents this week. Charleston entertains #2 Texas on Tuesday before a weekend series with perennial power East Carolina. Also on Tuesday, Delaware hosts #24 Maryland, JMU welcomes Virginia Tech and Elon is at home vs. NC State. Ohio State visits UNCW for a four-game series starting on Wednesday.

CHARLESTON (9-7, 0-0 CAA): The Cougars fell twice to Penn, but won two-of-three in a weekend series with UMass Lowell. Freshman Preston Hall was 6-for-11 with two homers and six RBI’s in the UML series. Donald Hansis was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI’s and JT Marr was 3-for-4 with two RBI’s as the Cougars got an 11-8 win on Friday. Marr is batting a team-best .419 for the season. Ty Good fanned eight over 5.1 innings vs. UML and has 27 strikeouts in 21.2 innings. Connor Campbell held ULM to one run over 6.0 innings and struck out eight on Sunday to up his record to 2-0. CofC entertains #2 Texas on Tuesday before a weekend series with East Carolina.

DELAWARE (6-7, 0-0 CAA): The Blue Hens rebounded from a setback to Delaware State by taking a doubleheader from Iona on Friday. Outfielder Bryce Greenly batted .500 (7-14) with two triples and seven runs scored for the week. He had a pair of three-hit games and raised his season batting average to .364. Chris Ludman held Iona to one earned run and fanned nine over 7.0 innings as the Hens took the opener, 3-2. UD had 21 hits and won the nightcap, 20-10. Joseph Carpenter was 4-for-5 and Jake Dunion was 3-for-5 with two RBI’s. Dunion is batting a team-best .375. The Hens host Maryland and Monmouth this week.

ELON (8-6, 0-0 CAA): The Phoenix dropped an 11-3 decision to #3 Notre Dame, but picked up a pair of weekend wins over UNCG. Alex Iadisernia belted a walk-off homer in the 12th as Elon beat UNCG, 4-3, on Friday. He leads the team with 18 RBI’s. Parker Haskin was 3-for-5 with four RBI’s and Luke Stephenson went 4-for-4 with three runs scored in Sunday’s 13-6 triumph over the Spartans. Closer Kyle Greenler didn’t give up a hit over the final 4.1 innings to earn the win on Friday vs. UNCG. He’s 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 14.0 innings of work this season. Elon hosts NC State on Tuesday before a weekend series with Army.

HOFSTRA (6-5, 0-0 CAA): The Pride had a 2-2 week following a doubleheader sweep of George Washington on Sunday. Hofstra won the opener, 2-0, as Brad Camarda gave up just five singles over 7.0 innings and struck out seven. He’s 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA. Chris Keenan allowed only one hit over the final 5.1 frames as Hofstra beat GW, 2-1, in 14 innings in Game 2. Santino Rossi drove in the game-winning run. Pride pitchers finished the day with 23 strikeouts and an unearned run allowed in 23.0 innings. Brian Morrell extended his hitting streak to eight games and his on base streak to 11 games last week. Hofstra faces Merrimack and Manhattan this week.

JAMES MADISON (8-8, 0-0 CAA): The Dukes dropped a pair of games at #10 Tennessee and then fell in a twinbill at Morehead State last week. Fenwick Trimble batted .385 for the week a double, two homers, four runs scored and four RBI’s. His first career homer was a game-tying shot in the 9th inning vs. the Vols. Trimble has reached base safely in 15 straight games. Kyle Novak was 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the opener at MSU and smacked a two-run homer in the nightcap. Carson Bell was 3-for-4 with two HR’s and five RBI’s in the first game at UT. JMU hosts Virginia Tech before heading to Winthrop this weekend.

UNCW (9-6, 0-0 CAA): The Seahawks swept a doubleheader from Kennesaw State on Sunday to cap a 2-2 week. Matt Gaither (2-1) held KSU to two hits over 6.0 scoreless innings as UNCW took the opener, 3-0, and Cyle Phelan and Bryce Cota combined for 5.0 shutout frames out of the bullen in a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap. Ethan Baucom and Dillon Lifrieri each homered and drove in two in a loss at Campbell. Baucom was also 3-for-4  with a homer and two RBI’s in the opener vs. KSU. Lifrieri tops UNCW with 16 RBI’s for the season. UNCW hosts Ohio State in a four-game series starting on Wednesday. 

NORTHEASTERN (7-7-1, 0-0 CAA): The Huskies took the finale of their three-game series at #18 Clemson, 5-3, handing the Tigers their first loss. Wyatt Scotti moved to 4-0 with a 1.01 ERA after giving up two earned runs over 7.1 innings and striking out a career-high 11. Luke Beckstein scored twice and drove in a run in the victory. Jeff Costello knocked in a pair of runs in the opener at Clemson. Mike Sirota had his 11-game hitting streak snapped vs. UMass, but continues to lead the team with a .371 batting average. NU has a busy five-game week ahead, facing Bryant, Merrimack, Holy Cross and Brown.

TOWSON (4-11, 0-0 CAA): The Tigers beat UMBC, 5-1, last Tuesday and split a twinbill with Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday. Nick Ramanjulu didn’t allow an earned run over 6.0 innings and fanned four to get the win vs. UMBC. Max Samson and James Moses had three hits apiece in the UMBC victory. Moses was also 4-for-8 in the doubleheader vs. FDU. Danny Becerra was 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBI’s in the win over FDU. Becerra, Burke Camper and Jordan Peyton hit back-to-back-to-back homers on Friday. Towson hosts Princeton in a four-game series this weekend.

WILLIAM & MARY (5-7, 0-0 CAA): The Tribe was edged 5-4 in 10 innings by Georgetown before being swept in a three-game series at Georgia Southern. Matt Thomas and Ben Williamson both smacked solo homers on Sunday at GSU. Thomas was also 2-for-5 and scored twice against GU. Zach Tsakounis tossed 3.0 shutout innings out of the pen at GSU on Sunday and gave up just one run in 3.0 innings in a start vs. GU. Reliever Nate Knowles recorded five strikeouts in 2.0 scoreless innings against the Eagles on Saturday. W&M plays a doubleheader at Davidson before facing George Mason in a three-game weekend series.
