Oregon State kicked off the final day of the 2025 Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 3 with a back-and-fourth 12-10 win over Ohio State.

Some games are won with powerful hitting. Some are won with dominant pitching or defense. 

Occasionally, a game is just hours of utter chaos, and that certainly was the case when Ohio State and Oregon State kicked off the final day of action at the 2025 Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 3 in Arlington, Texas.

In the end, No. 9 Oregon State used a five-run eighth-inning rally to regain the lead and outlast the Buckeyes in the four-hour battle. 

The Beavers led by five runs after four innings and then had to play catch up in order to leave Globe Life Field with a winning record for the weekend.

Oregon State was 2-1 at the event and improves to 7-3 on the season, while Ohio State went 0-3 in Texas and now is 1-8 for the year. 

The Amegy Bank College Baseball Series again is being held at GLF, home of the world champion Texas Rangers, as part of three exciting weekends of college baseball in Texas.

The schedule includes the Shriners Children’s College Showdown (Feb. 14-16), Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented by Kubota Weekend 2 (Feb. 21-23) and Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented by Kubota Weekend 3 (Feb. 28-March 2).

There also are a handful of midweek games on Feb. 18, Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 5.

The clash between Oregon State and Ohio State was the first of two games Sunday, with Auburn and Baylor set to close out the third weekend of play.

The Beavers were seeking redemption after being upset by Auburn on Saturday night in an 8-7 nailbiter, and they wasted no time getting on the board against struggling Ohio State, putting up four runs in the opening inning. 

Oregon State added a run in the second inning and two more in the third to build a 7-2 lead over the Buckeyes, but it turned out not to be enough.

To cap a five-run sixth inning that gave Ohio State the lead for the first time, junior Matthew Graveline hit a first-pitch fastball the other way for a bases-clearing, three-RBI double off the wall with two outs.

Ohio State added an insurance run in the seventh inning, but the momentum swung back in Oregon State’s favor when the Beavers mounted their game-winning rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. 

The game was the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Oregon State now leading the all-time series 8-2.

On the way to the win Sunday, Oregon State scored its 12 runs on 13 hits, while leaving six runners on base.

The Beavers committed three errors to help Ohio State stay in the contest. The Buckeyes scored their 10 runs on 11 hits but also stranded 11 runners on base.

Junior Aiva Arquette was the offense spark for Oregon State, going 4 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored. He was one of four Beavers with multiple hits.

Oregon State sent five pitchers to the mound against Ohio State, with redshirt senior right-hander Joey Mundt (1-0) getting the victory and sophomore righty Matthew Morrell getting the save. The combined to pitch the final 2 1/3 innings of the game.

Ohio State used seven pitchers in the contest, with starter, sophomore right-hander Jake Michalak, lasting just 2/3 of an inning. The loss went to graduate left-hander Like Carrell, the sixth pitcher of the day. He tossed 1 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on four hits.

Offensively, it was Graveline who had the best day for the Buckeyes, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs. He was one of two Buckeyes with more than one hit.

Earlier in the weekend, Ohio State lost to Auburn in a seven-inning run-rule contest Friday (13-0) and fell to Baylor on Saturday (8-6).

Oregon State entered the final game of the weekend at 6-3 overall, following a win and a loss to start things off in Arlington. The Beavers topped Baylor 4-3 on Friday but were defeated by Auburn on Saturday.

The Beavers now will head back to Corvallis, Oregon, for a three-game series against San Diego, beginning March 7.

Ohio State will return home to welcome St. John’s for an afternoon game March 4.

Ohio State and Oregon State have faced each other nine time in the past, with Oregon State leading the series 7-2.

They played for the first time in 1990, an 11-10 win by the Beavers, but they didn’t play again until a two-game series they split in 2000. 

The most recent encounter was a two-game set during the Big Ten/Pac-12 Spring Training College Baseball Challenge in February 2018. Oregon State won both games and will enter their 2025 showdown with a three-game winning streak against the Buckeyes. 

Heading into their meeting Sunday, Ohio State is looking for its first win of the weekend, while Oregon State is 1-1.

Where Is The 2025 College Baseball Showdown?

The Shriners Children’s College Showdown and two-weekend Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented by Kubota are taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and feature some of the top teams in the nation. 

The 2025 season marks the fifth consecutive year of college baseball at Globe Life Field – home of the world champion Texas Rangers – and the second straight year the action spans three weekends. 

When Is The College Baseball Showdown?

The first weekend of the festivities, the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, began Friday, Feb. 14 and ran through Feb. 16. 

The following two weeks of action, the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series, were set for Feb. 21-23 and Feb. 28-March 2.

To keep the momentum going between the weekends, the series also includes four midweek games at Globe Life Field. Those contests are taking place Feb. 18, Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 5.

About Ohio State Baseball

Heading into its road trip to Texas, the Ohio State baseball team was 1-5 on the season and enjoying a five-day break after back-to-back losses at the Jax College Baseball Classic in Jacksonville, Florida.

By the time the Buckeyes and Oregon State get underway Sunday for their final day at Globe Life Field, they’ll each have played two games in the Lone Star State. Ohio State’s first two were Auburn and Baylor.

The Buckeyes are looking to improve on their 29-26 performance last season, which included a 12-12 effort in Big Ten play. That was good enough to finish in the middle of the conference standings and earn a spot in the Big Ten Baseball Tournament. 

OSU advanced to the second round of the event but lost to Indiana and Nebraska to see the season come to an end.

About Oregon State Baseball

Oregon State opened the 2025 season with five consecutive wins, scoring more than 15 runs in two of those victories, but that streak was followed by back-to-back losses to close out the Round Rock Classic in Round Rock, Texas.

After the skid, the Beavers (5-2) dropped two spots in the D1Baseball Top 25 this week from No. 7 to No. 9. That said, even with the recent misfortune, they’re still the highest-ranked team competing this weekend in Arlington. 

They arrived in Texas looking to turn things around with in games against Baylor, Auburn and Ohio State. 

Last year, Oregon State had a great season, finishing 45-16, which included a 19-10 mark in the Pac-12. The Beavers finished second behind departing Arizona in the conference standings.

Oregon State made a memorable run through the 2024 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, eventually seeing the season come to an end at the hands of Kentucky at the NCAA Lexington Super Regional.

Along the way, Oregon State participated in the early-season Kubota College Baseball Series, posting a 2-1 record at Globe Life Field.
