Texas Baseball Names to Know

Max Belyeu

A sensational sophomore campaign propelled outfielder Max Belyeu to Big 12 Player of the Year honors and has him positioned as one of the top 100 Major League prospects in the 2025 draft class.

Belyeu hit .329 in 210 at-bats a season ago with a team-high-matching 18 home runs and a Texas-best .667 slugging percentage. His 1.090 OPS also led the Longhorns.

Jalin Flores

Shortstop Jalin Flores had an outstanding 2024 that was marred with NCAA Tournament disappointment. After committing a pair of errors in the Longhorns’ regional loss to Texas A&M, Flores has an opportunity to wash away the bitter taste with his return to Austin for another season.

Flores opted to forego the MLB draft for another year of college ball, and he has All-America potential in 2025. The shortstop’s coming off a 2024 in which he hit .340 with a 1.064 OPS and .601 slugging percentage, and matched Belyeu’s team-high 18 home runs.

Max Grubbs

Texas returns its Friday starter for the latter half of 2024 to head up the 2025 pitching rotation. Max Grubbs took over that role in April and had three starts in which he allowed only one earned run. He struck out 25 after stepping into the premier position of the lineup, half of his total strikeouts for the season.

Grubbs returns looking to build on his 6-4 record and 3.67 ERA.

Ethan Mendoza

A highly touted prep prospect who came out of Southlake Carroll High School, Ethan Mendoza returns to Lone Star State as a transfer from Arizona State.

The versatile infielder can play second, third or shortstop equally effectively, and brings another solid bat to the Longhorns offense. Mendoza hit .315 for the Sun Devils in 2024, driving in 24 in the process.

Kimble Schuessler

One of the four Texas batters who one-dotted in 2024, catcher Kimble Schuessler boasted the best batting average of all the Longhorns return batters. He delivered 61 knocks in 178 at-bats for a .343 average, including 10 home runs and 14 doubles.

A steady presence behind the plate as well, Schuessler is one of the cornerstones for Texas’ College World Series aspirations in 2025.

Jared Spencer

Indiana State transfer Jared Spencer’s debut is one of the most exciting subplots to Texas’ appearance in the Shriners Children’s Classic.

Spencer is a versatile option for the Longhorns pitching staff, thriving as both a starter and reliever for the Sycamores a season ago. He worked 53 innings in both capacities last season, striking out 72 while limiting batters to a .216 batting average.

Texas Baseball Opponents at Shriners Children’s Showdown 2025

Louisville

Louisville went 32-24 in 2024, including 16-14 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cardinals fell short of reaching the NCAA Tournament, but have designs on the postseason in 2025 with a veteran lineup.

Headlining Louisville’s corps of upperclassmen is shortstop Gavin Kilen, a top 20-ranked 2025 MLB draft prospect. Kilen hit .330 a season ago with nine home runs and drove in 41, providing pop at the plate to match his dynamite glove on defense.

Louisville also features a top 75 MLB draft target in left-handed pitcher Kayden Campbell. Campbell pitched 20 innings for the Cardinals a season ago, striking out 22.

Oklahoma State

Reigning Big 12 Conference champion Oklahoma State is a familiar foe for Texas. The programs shared a league for almost 30 years, but with the Longhorns moving to the SEC, meet as non-conference counterparts at the Shriners Children’s Classic.

The Cowboys went 42-19 in 2024 and came within a game of advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals. However, Texas won the season series, two games to one.

Oklahoma State reloads in pursuit of the 2025 College World Series with three players ranked in the top 75 of the next MLB draft class, including top 10 prospect and outfielder Nolan Schubart.

Schubart batted .370 with 23 home runs in 2024 and produced an on-base percentage of .513. Fellow highly touted 2025 draft prospect and catcher Beau Sylvester returns after an injury – sustained at Globe Life Field in a collision at first base – cut short his 2024.

Ole Miss

A six-game losing skid to close out the season ended Ole Miss’ 2024 in disappointing fashion. Texas’ new conference counterpart embarks on Arlington looking to begin 2025 on a much different trajectory.

The Rebels advanced to the College World Series in 2022, their second trip to Omaha in a decade. This year’s group will look to make another trip there behind a strong pitching staff that features right-handers Grayson Saunier and JT Quinn.
