The 2024 MLB Draft begins at 7 p.m. EST at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas and the Cleveland Guardians will make the first pick of the draft.

The Guardians, drafting No. 1 for the first time in franchise history, had a slim chance at winning the top pick during the MLB Lottery last December but were the big winners. In fact, the Cincinnati Reds, who won the pick, was also rare.

How rare? The Guardians and Reds winning the top picks had a combined .02% chance of happening.

Who will go No. 1? Truly only the Guardians know. The top prospect is considered Charlie Condon or Travis Bazzana but once No. 1 prospect J.J. Wetherholt is being rumored as the top pick today.

Condon was the composite No. 1 prospect at FloBaseball.

Compensation And Incentive Picks In The 2024 MLB Draft

39. Washington Nationals: Caleb Lomavita, C, California Baseball

38. Colorado Rockies: Brody Brecht, RHP, Iowa Baseball

37. Pittsburgh Pirates: Levi Sterling, RHP, Notre Dame, Calif.

36. Cleveland Guardians: Braylon Doughty, RHP, Chaparral, Calif.

35. Arizona Diamondbacks: JD Dix, SS, Whitefish Bay, Wisc.

34. Milwaukee Brewers: Blake Burke, 1B/LHP, Tennessee

33. Minnesota Twins: Kyle DeBarge, SS, Louisiana-Lafayette Baseball

32. Baltimore Orioles: Griff O’ Ferrall, Virginia Baseball, SS

31. Arizona Diamondbacks: Ryan Waldschmidt, OF, Kentucky Baseball

He helped take UK to the College World Series. At least one other mock draft has him going to the Braves as well. He wasn’t in the top-25 of most prospect rankings to start the college season, but the 6-foot-1, 205-pound outfielder who started his career at Charleston Southern and slashed .359/.482/.657 with 14 home runs and 24 stole bases this season. He probably projects as a left fielder at the next level with only as a 45- and 40-grade fielder and arm, but it’s the hitting that gets him to the big leagues.

Malcolm Moore Drafted By The Texas Rangers At No. 30 In The MLB Draft 2024

Moore is coming off a poor 2024 season where he hit just .255/.414/.553, but he did hit 16 home runs. As a freshman he hit .311/.386/.564 with 15 home runs and 20 doubles.

Slade Caldwell Drafted By The Arizona Diamondbacks At No. 29 In MLB Draft 2024

Caldwell was slated to go at the end of the first round by many and he lands at No. 28 The outfielder  has high upside.

Walker Janek Drafted By The Houston Astros At No. 28 In MLB Draft 2024

The Astros take a Sam Houston State product. Janek is the best fielding catcher in the class In fact, he’s the top graded defensive catcher in the draft. The 6-foot, 190-pound catcher hit .368/.480/.714 with 17 home runs in Conference USA.

Danti Nori Drafted By Philadelphia Phillies At No. 27 In MLB Draft 2024

We thought the Phillies would go high school, but with Kash Mayfield off the board, they opted for Nori of Michigan at center field.

Ben Hess Drafted By The New York Yankees At No. 26 In MLB Draft

Ben Hess wasn't looking like a first round pick, but Hess was the No. 38 prospect at FloBaseball. The Alabama Baseball star had a 5.80 ERA this season but a 3.22 ERA in 2023.

Kash Mayfield Drafted By The San Diego Padres At No. 25 In MLB Draft 2024

For the eighth year in a row, the Padres take a high school player. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound lefty has a 60-grade control for a 19-year-old. That’s pretty impressive. The rest of his pitches grade at 55 and he has touched 97 with his fastball. He’s committed to Oklahoma State.

Cam Caminiti Drafted By The Atlanta Braves At No. 24 In MLB Draft 2024

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound pitcher from Arizona has a 70-grade fastball, one of the best in the draft. At just 17 at the time of the draft, he’s one of the youngest prospect eligible in 2024. Committed to LSU, he’s the nephew of 1996 National League MVP Ken Caminiti.

He was thought to be a target by the Tigers at No. 11, so this is probably a surprise for the Braves,

Kellon Lindsey Drafted By Los Angeles Dodgers At No. 23 In MLB Draft 2024

We had the Dodgers taking a high school prospect in 2024 mock drafts and that's what they did. The Dodgers have the luxury of drafting long term developmental projects or best available prospects mainly because they don’t need to rely on home grown talent to replace outgoing players. But they do it all the time with a lot of success. Lindsey was the best Florida prospect and some view him as the best defensive shortstop in the draft.

Vance Honeycutt Drafted By Baltimore Orioles At No. 22 In MLB Draft 2024

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound outfielder is one of the best defensive players in the draft and has a 65-run grade. Whether he becomes the next Billy Hamilton or Mookie Betts is the question. He is UNC’s all-time leader in home runs with 61 in his career and he stole 70 bases, something no other college baseball player has ever done. He hit .300 for the first time in his career this season but also struckout 28% of the time. He’s considered the riskiest player among the top prospects.

Kaelen Culpepper Drafted By The Minnesota Twins At No. 21 In MLB Draft 2024

The greatest Kansas State player ever was a .312/.403/.529 hitter in college. He’ll play shortstop or third base at the next level and his 55-run grade helped him steal 27 bases for KSU.

Watch Travis Bazzana Highlights After He Went No. 1

Trey Yesavage Drafted By The Toronto Blue Jays At No. 20 In MLB Draft 2024

He is the biggest steal of the draft and top-10 prospect on the composite rankings.

Had Yesavage not suffered a scary injury with a partially collapsed lung at the end of his amazing 2024 season. The injury probably scared away some teams who were looking for a sure thing. But when healthy, perhaps that is Yesavage. He is one of the most MLB-ready pitchers in the class and the clear No. 3. He had a 2.02 ERA in 15 starts and 93.1 innings. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound right-hander has a 55-grade on all his pitches and control. His fastball has touched 97.

Carson Benge Drafted By New York Mets At No. 19 In MLB Draft 2024

He pitched out of the bullpen for Oklahoma State and did have Tommy John surgery that caused him to miss 2022. He throws low-90s and while he could be a pitcher at the next level, his future seems to be at right field and at the plate. He had an 82% contact rate and hit over .300 in both seasons with the Cowboys. At 6-foot-1, 184 pounds, Benge is 20 years old and may not fly through the system faster than other prospects due to some swing mechanics, but the way he makes contact and avoids strikeouts, that may not be the case.

Theo Gillen Drafted By Tampa Bay Rays At No. 18 In MLB Draft 2024

Some have the surging Gillen, a shortstop who could be an outfielder at the next level, as the third-best high school hitter. At 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, he’s committed to the home town Texas Longhorns but his left-handed swing have scouts impressed. He has 55 hit and 60 run grades.

Braylon Payne Drafted By Milwaukee Brewers At No. 17 In MLB Draft 2024

The Brewers take the Nio. 65-ranked prospect in the FloBaseball composite rankings. The outfielder from Texas heads to the Brewers as a surprise, especially with Carson Benge available. The Brewers may be eying their first round supplemental pick here and going under slot value.

P.J. Morlando Drafted By Miami Marlins At No. 16 In MLB Draft 2024

Morlando is the third prep player drafted and one of the bigger surprises so far. Though his stock dropped during the year, he goes right around preseason expectations were. The outfielder projects as a left fielder.

Morlando was the No. 52 prospects entering the draft.

Jurrangelo Cijntje Drafted By Seattle Mariners At No. 15 In MLB Draft 2024

No player climbed the prospect and draft rankings more than Cijntje this spring. A rare “both handed pitcher” Cijntje is more than a novelty act. There have been “switch pitchers” before but just about no one has been able to throw 94 with both arms. The 5-foot-11-inch, 200 pound pitcher is stronger with his right arm. He threw 90.2 innings this season with a 3.67 ERA. He has a 60-grade fastball and 55-grade slider.

Cam Smith Drafted By Chicago Cubs At No. 14 In MLB Draft 2024

Baseball America’s No. 16-ranked prospect, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound third baseman helped lead the Seminoles to the College World Series. He hit .402/.497/.677 with 16 home runs and 20 doubles. He also struck out almost 13% fewer times in 2024.

James Tibbs III Drafted By San Francisco Giants At No. 13 In MLB Draft 2024

Tibbs hit .363 in 2024 and .338 for his career. As a junior he hit 28 home runs and 18 doubles. He led the Seminoles to the College World Series. He is conservative pick with his outstanding hitting and he projects as either a left fielder or first baseman. He could move quickly through the system.

Braden Montgomery Drafted By Boston Red Sox At No. 12 In MLB Draft 2024

The Red Sox get the steal as Montgomery drops out of the top 10. Many thought Nick Kurtz would be who drops, but it was Montgomery.

He was arguably the best transfer in college baseball this past season when he left Stanford for the Aggies. He helped Texas A&M reach the College World Series, though he broke his ankle in the Super Regional and didn’t play in Omaha. Starting the season as a fringe top-10 prospect, he played himself out of the fringe and solidly into the top 10 and even in the top 5 on some lists. He was pegged as high as No. 4 to the Oakland A’s in MLB’s latest mock draft, but that mock has Bazzana going No. 1. The 6-foot-2, 201-pound outfielder was also a talented pitcher, but only pitched two innings this past season. He hit .322 with 27 home runs and 14 doubles for the Aggies.

When Will Braden Montgomery Get Drafted?

Braden Montgomery is dropping and it could be because of the injury. Still, some team is about to consider a player who hit .322 with 27 home runs and 14 doubles for the Aggies and was considered by some a top-5 player in the class.

Bryce Rainer Drafted By Detroit Tigers At No. 11 In MLB Draft 2024

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound shortstop had a huge spring and he could play either position at a high level  with his 70-grade arm and 60-grade power, 60-grade fastball and curveball. He could be a first round pick at either position if he dropped one, said Baseball America. He is committed to the University of Texas, which means the Tigers may have to pay over slot to get him.

The expectation is he'll drop pitching.

Wake Forest Baseball Dominates Top 10

Chase Burns, Nick Kutz and Seaver King make up 30% of top 10 of the draft.

Seaver King Drafted BY Washington Nationals At No. 10 In MLB Draft 2024

Starting the season as a consensus top-10 prospect after dominating at the Division II level, King transferred to Wake Forest. He bounced back from a slow start to slash .308/.377/.577 with 16 home runs and 11 stole bases. Defensively the speedy outfielder with a 70-run grade who stands 6-foot, 195 pounds, can play center field or shortstop.

When Chase Burns Found Out He Was Going To Cincinnati

Konnor Griffin Drafted By Pittsburgh Pirates At No. 9 In MLB Draft 2024

Konnor Griffin and Bryce Rainer are considered the best prep prospects and Griffin has spent most of the year as the highest graded prospects at the prep level. Baseball America still ranks Griffin higher than Rainer as the 6-foot-4, 210-pound shortstop/ outfield prospect is an amazing athlete with a 70-run grade. Originally in the 2025 class, he reclassified and was named the High School Player of the Year. He stole 85 bases in his 2024 season. An LSU commit, Griffin may have to sign over slot value at No. 10.

All-Access With Tennessee Baseball's Christian Moore
null

Christian Moore Drafted By Los Angeles Angels At No. 8 In MLB Draft 2024

The College World Series hero and national champ, Moore is the pick here. He surged up the mock drafts and prospect lists.

Moore hit .376/.453/.796 with 32 home runs.

JJ Wetherholt Drafted By St. Louis Cardinals At No. 7 In MLB Draft 2024

That eye roll you just felt was every fan of a team in the National League Central not called the Cardinals. Of course the Cardinals take a person that an hour ago everyone thought would be the No. 1 pick at No. 7.

Wetherholt was the presumptive No. 1 pick early this year when he led most prospect lists. In 2023, he hit .449/.517/.782 with 16 home runs and 36 stolen bases. He was the Big 12 Player of the Year. But his summer season was cut short with a hamstring that returned this spring to cost him most of 2024. He wound up hitting .331 in 36 games this season with eight home runs and eight doubles.

Jac Caglianone Drafted By Kansas City Royals At No. 6 In MLB Draft 2024

Man. What a pick by the Royals. Cags falling to the Royals at No. 6 was a gift as the huge slugger could eventually join with Bobby Witt Jr. to become one of the most fun tandems in baseball.

He’s the most fun prospect, though it seems unlikely he’ll continue to pitch at the professional level. But when you have this kind of power, he’s still incredibly fun. We can talk about the home runs and note that he walked and struck out less in 2024, but it’s important to note that he was the best player on two college World Series teams and one of those teams had Wyatt Langford on it. He could be even better at the plate with complete focus there, scouts believe. Now if he does pitch, he can throw 100 mph but there’s more work to do. Whether he moves quickly through the system will be based on his development in plate discipline.

Caglianone won’t have to spend time in the minors to develop as a defender. He had a great average and massive power, but his flaw was his chase rate. He improved that this year, with just 8.1% strikeout rate, but still has a 43% chase rate. If he can continue that, Jac could be on the roster by May 2025.

How Hagen Smith Fits In Chicago White Sox System

The White Sox already traded Dylan Cease and Garrett Crochet is likely next. The White Sox are rebuilding, but Smith shouldn't take that long in the minors.

Watch Hagen Smith Strikeout Travis Bazzana And All The Beavers At The College Baseball Showdown

null

Hagen Smith Drafted By The Chicago White Sox At No. 5 In MLB Draft 2024

The only reason Smith probably wasn't the first pitcher taken is the Tommy John surgery on his resume. Some feel that the younger you get Tommy John, the more likely it is that a second “make-up” surgery is needed. But if we’re basing it on just pitching, Smith had a 2.04 ERA in 2024 and had one of the best strikeouts-per-nine numbers ever. He was a Golden Spikes Award finalist and the SEC Pitcher of the Year.

This is the second surprise pick, but again, everyone needs more pitching.

How Nick Kurtz Fits In Oakland Athletics System

The A's are moving to Vegas but will be playing Sacramento for the next few years as the stadium is built. So if Kurtz needs more development time, it's probably fine by Oakland, which is in a massive rebuild, expected to sell at this deadline and probably focused on loading the system with prospects ready to play by the time they get to Vegas.

Nick Kurtz Drafted By Oakland A's At No. 4 In MLB Draft 2024

Kurtz was one of the top players entering the season and bounce back from a slow start to finish with a .306 average and hit 21 home runs. He has a career slashline of .333/.510/.725. he began the season as one of the top-two prospects on most lists.

How Charlie Condon Fits In The Colorado Rockies System

The Rockies are rebuilding and need more talent in the system. This pick makes sense for them as Condon was the No. 1 prospect in the draft class.

Charlie Condon Drafted By Colorado Rockies At No. 3 In MLB Draft 2024

He was college baseball’s best player this spring with a .433 batting average, 37 home runs, 1.009 slugging percentage and 20 doubles. It’s also not like he was a one-year wonder. Condon was a universal top-10 and in most cases top-5 prospect. The 6-foot-6, 219 pound prospect has room to grow physically and developmentally. Almost every mock draft over the last month had Cleveland passing on Condon and most mock drafts had Cincinnati Reds not blinking and taking Condon. But the team that already has Kris Bryant took the player who most resembles hgis draft profile.

Chase Burns Drafted By Cincinnati Reds At No. 2 in MLB Draft 2024

Maybe this pick is the Reds playing the slot value game like they have done in the past, including last year when they signed No. 7 pick Rhett Lowder under value and over spent on Sammy Stafura in the second round. But does passing on Charlie Condon and Travis Bazzana make sense?

Well, let’s make something clear: By the time we got to this point, Chase Burns was considered the best pitcher in the draft class, just like many felt Lowder was the second-best pitcher after Paul Skenes last year. This pick makes sense, and even made sense at No. 1 to Cleveland, because the best way for small market teams to acquire difference-making, All-Star caliber aces is through the draft. For the Reds to acquire an ace pitcher via trade, the farm system is going to be drained. And the Reds will likely never be able to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees in the free agent market. So drafting, developing and debuting pitchers is never a bad route. Burns is the best pitcher in the class. He had a 2.72 ERA. he struck out 162 batters. He was probably the most dominant transfer in college baseball in 2024 when he joined Wake Forest. And he hasn’t had Tommy John Surgery, yet, which probably gave him the edge over Hagen Smith. Burns throws in the upper-90s on his fastball and has a devastating slider, both pitches grading at a 70.

How Chase Burns Fits In The Cincinnati Reds System

Everyone needs more pitching. The Reds seemed loaded with young arms entering the season, but top-100 prospects Connor Philips and Chase Petty have not had great minor league seasons in 2024 so far. Lowder dominated Single-A, but had a rough time adjusting to Double-A, although results are better and he made the MLB Futures Game. Brandon Williamson has been hurt all season long and it doesn’t seem all that likely he’ll pitch in what would have been his second season. Meanwhile, the big league team has Hunter Greene (an All-Star this year), Nick Lodolo (pitching like an All-Star around his various injuries) and Andrew Abbott (the Reds most consistent pitcher in 2024) in the rotation. Graham Ashcraft took a massive step back, but Carson Spiers has been one of the pleasant surprises of a frustrating Reds season.

Burns gives the Reds another possible front-line starter by 2026, a season that the Reds should be circling as a year where they can be more than National League Central contenders. I would expect Burns to be on the same timeline that Lowder is on this year. Which is to say that Burns could be debuting in 2025 if he reached Double-A and performs well.

Everyone needs more pitching.

Watch No.1 Pick Travis Bazzana Play For Oregon State Baseball On FloBaseball

Travis Bazzana and the Beavers played several times on FloBaseball, including the first games of the season.

null
Travis Bazzana Drafted By Cleveland Guardians at No. 1 In MLB Draft 2024

Travis Bazzana started the season as a unanimous top-3 prospect and then had the second-best season of any player in college baseball. The All-American hit .407 with 28 home runs and 16 doubles and 16 steals. He slugged .911 and had an on-base percentage of .568. One of the best athletes in the draft, the native of Sydney, Australia is the only player other than Charlie Condon to enter MLB Draft Day on a prominent prospect ranking (MLB Pipeline, as if they knew this was happening).

How Travis Bazzana Fits In Cleveland Guardians System

This isn’t really a slot value decision, probably, as Bazzana was either No. 1 or No. 2 on most prospect lists. A middle infielder makes more sense for the Guardians system. Only two of the Guardians top-10 ranked prospects are infielders (Juan Brito and Angel Martinez) while the system has four outfielders and first basemen in the top 10. The Guardians would probably have loved for a truly dominant pitching prospect to be in this draft like Paul Skenes or Gerrit Cole, but they aren’t the Pirates and that’s not what this class had. Pitcher Chase Burns was incredible this season, but Bazzana may have the highest ceiling in the draft and could be one of the more major league ready players in the class. There’s a good chance that, like Skenes this year, the No. 1 overall pick is one of the first players from the class to debut.

Cleveland Guardians Are Ready To Make The No. 1 Pick Of 2024 MLB Draft

Braden Montgomery, Trey Yesavage Should Go High Despite Injuries

Two of the best prospects in the 2024 draft are Braden Montgomery of Texas A&M and Trey Yesavage of East Carolina. Both are in the top 10 of the FloBaseball composite rankings. Montgomery has been mocked as high as No. 4 to Oakland after his huge 2024 spring. But he broke his ankle in the NCAA Super Regionals.

Yesavage is the clear No. 3 pitcher in the draft, but a collapsed lung end his season. Despite it all, both should go in the first half of the first round tonight.

null
Kansas City Royals, Washington Nationals Trade Changes First Round Order

The Kansas City Royals traded for pitcher Hunter Harvey of the Washington Nationals and sent Cayden Wallace and the No. 39 pick on July 13. A competitive balance round pick, the No. 39 pick is the second draft pick traded, the first being the No. 34 pick that Baltimore sent to Milwaukee in the Corbin Burnes trade in the offseason.

Competitive Balance round picks are allowed to be traded.
