Get to know more about the 2024 Pirates below.
How Did East Carolina Baseball Do In 2023?
East Carolina won its fourth consecutive conference championship en route to its fifth straight NCAA Tournament in 2023, along the way matching the program's high watermark for single-season wins over the past decade with 47.
The 47-19 Pirates fell short of advancing to a third consecutive Super Regional, however, dropping a pair to Charlottesville Regional host and College World Series qualifier Virginia.
Who Coaches East Carolina Baseball?
Cliff Godwin became head coach at East Carolina, his alma mater, in 2015. He replaced Billy Godwin—no relation—after more than a decade of working as an assistant at noteworthy programs like Vanderbilt and LSU.
Godwin was on the roster of three NCAA Tournament-qualifying teams from 1999 through 2001, a stretch in which the Pirates made the postseason field seven straight seasons. It's taken the program little time in his tenure as head coach to recapture that level of success, with the 2024 Pirates aiming for a sixth straight NCAA Tournament.
Has East Carolina Ever Won The College World Series?
No, East Carolina has never won the College World Series.
The Pirates have yet to reach Omaha, advancing to Super Regionals seven times—all since 2001—but never quite getting over the hump.
Notable Returning Players
Trey Yesavage, RHP
A 2023 All-America selection, Trey Yesavage returns in 2024 with the preseason designation of an All-American once again. He's the ace of the East Carolina pitching staff, having last year amassed a 2.61 ERA over 76 innings of work.
Yesavage struck out 105 batters in 2023, with five games mowing down at least 11. Among his impressive performances was an 11-strikeout shutout over 7 1/3 innings against Missouri State. MLB.com projects Yesavage as a borderline first-rounder come 2024 draft season.
Carter Cunningham, 1B
Carter Cunningham earned All-American Athletic Conference First Team designation in 2023 after batting .317 with eight home runs and 39 RBI.
Although he was integral to the Pirates winning the American and was recognized as such, he went on a tear after individual honors were passed out with four multiple-hit games in the AAC Championship and NCAA Tournament.
Notable Newcomers
Bristol Carter, OF
Perfect Game named Bristol Carter 57th among incoming freshmen around college baseball. The local prospect from Northwest Guilford High School in Oak Ridge, North Carolina, was named a prep All-American in 2023 with a whopping .546 batting average.
Once on-base, Carter swiped 50 bases. That dual-threat could make him an immediate contributor to the Pirates offense.
Chris Kahler, RHP
Adding veteran savvy to the East Carolina pitching rotation is George Washington transfer Chris Kahler. The right-handed Kahler earned All-Atlantic 10 honors for GWU with a 3.57 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings pitched.
