How Did Florida Gulf Coast Baseball Do In 2023?
Florida Gulf Coast baseball celebrated its 20th year anniversary in 2023 with a 42-18 overall record. However, the Eagles fell short of the NCAA Tournament, losing in the ASUN Championship to Lipscomb.
Who Coaches Florida Gulf Coast Baseball?
Dave Tollett has been at the helm of Florida Gulf Coast baseball from the program's inception. Named the head coach in 2002, Tollett has coached the Eagles in transition from NAIA to NCAA Div. II, and almost immediate success upon moving up to NCAA Div. I.
Last season's 42 wins were the program's second-most ever, behind only the 2017 NCAA Tournament-qualifying team's 43 victories.
Has Florida Gulf Coast Ever Won The College World Series?
No, Florida Gulf Coast has never won the College World Series.
The Eagles' lone appearance in the Div. I NCAA Tournament ended in 2017 with a pair of losses to Davidson.
Notable Returning Players
Harrison Povey, RHP/OF
Harrison Povey earned Freshman All-American recognition in 2022 after batting .288 and homering 15 times.
Povey showed no sign of a sophomore slump in 2023, improving his batting average to .303 and knocking out 19 round-trippers. As the leading home-run hitter on a team that blasted them out of the park with near-unmatched consistency, Povey's return in 2024 promises to keep FGCU among the most dangerous power-hitting teams in the country.
Jacob Lojewski, RHP/INF
With 18 home runs in 2023, Jacob Lojewski was another leading power hitter for last season's Eagles. His breakout 2023 marked an impressive bounce-back after missing most of 2022 due to injury.
Lojewski also made four appearances on the mound a season ago, striking out four batters in 9 2/3 innings pitched.
Notable Newcomers
Jake Bunz, LHP
Jake Bunz comes to Florida Gulf Coast from Nebraska, where he showed plenty of potential coming out of the Cornhuskers bullpen.
The 6-foot-7 lefty had a 3.86 ERA in 2023 with 18 strikeouts. In 2021, Bunz had a 2.20 ERA and 42 strikeouts as the primary option out of the Nebraska bullpen.
Derek Crum, LHP
After three seasons at 2023 College World Series-qualifying Wake Forest, Derek Crum joins the Florida Gulf Coast pitching staff. Crum, a left-hander, had a 3.38 ERA for the Demon Deacons with 14 strikeouts.
