How Did Indiana State Baseball Do In 2023?
One of the best seasons in Indiana State baseball history produced a 45-17 overall record—a dominant 24-3 finish in the Missouri Valley Conference—and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
The Sycamores postseason began with a bang. Indiana State went 3-0 through the Terre Haute Regional with wins over Wright State and Iowa en route to the Super Regional. TCU ended Indiana State's aspirations of a College World Series berth.
Who Coaches Indiana State Baseball?
Mitch Hannahs, a member of the 1986 Indiana State College World Series team, became the Sycamores head coach in 2014.
Hannahs has had an outstanding tenure as Sycamores coach, finishing with an above-.500 record every year he's been back in Terre Haute, and led Indiana State to four NCAA Tournament appearances. The 2019 and 2023 teams each eclipsed 40 wins under Hannahs' direction.
Has Indiana State Ever Won The College World Series?
No, Indiana State has never won the College World Series.
The Sycamores made their only appearance in the College World Series in 1986, when losses to Florida State and Oklahoma State ended Indiana State's stay in Omaha. Indiana State is coming off its deep run in the NCAA Tournament since with a Super Regional appearance in 2023.

Adam Pottinger, OF
Picked No. 62 among all outfielders by D1Baseball, Adam Pottinger returns after leading Indiana State in batting a season ago at .299.
Pottinger hit 11 home runs in 187 at-bats, drove in 36 runs, and boasted a team-leading .449 on-base percentage. The All-Missouri Valley Conference honoree Pottinger finished 2023 on a hot streak at the plate, connecting for hits in seven of the final eight games spanning the MVC Championship and NCAA Tournament.
Jared Spencer, LHP
No. 8 among D1Baseball's relief pitchers heading into 2024 is Jared Spencer, Indiana State's Jared Spencer struck out 51 batters in 37 1/3 innings of work last season. He accrued seven saves, held opposing batters to a .203 batting average, and finished with a 3.86 ERA.
Notable Newcomers
Matt Parenteau, RHP
Transfer pitcher Matt Parenteau comes to Indiana State from Ole Miss, by way of Parkland College in Illinois. In 2021, Parenteau was a JUCO All-American.
He worked out of the bullpen for Ole Miss, striking out five batters in four appearances before re-aggravating an injury sustained in the summer.
Victor Cartagena, SS
Coming to Indiana State from the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, freshman Victor Cartagena was rated Perfect Game's top shortstop prospect in Puerto Rico for the 2023 signing class.
Cartagena gained some online notoriety when his catch at the 2022 Senior Little League World Series went viral. The play sealed a championship for the Puerto Rican team, and showed off the youngster's defensive chops.
