College Baseball Opening Day is Feb. 16, and all eyes in the sport will be on the College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field.

Six teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12 are in action to kickoff the three-weekend event. 

The teams playing in the first weekend of the 2024 Shriners Children's College Showdown include No. 8 Tennessee, No. 22 Texas Tech as well as Oregon, which received 42 votes in the preseason NCAA baseball rankings.

The major change to the event this season is that it spans three weekends, but the opening three days will feature nine games with action starting at noon EST. 

Here are three things to know about Day 1 of the College Baseball Showdown. 

Nebraska Baseball Vs. Baylor Baylor: Rob Childress Is Back For Cornhuskers

Neither of these teams made the 2023 NCAA Baseball Tournament and for Baylor, last year was a disaster in Mitch Thompson’s first season as head coach. They went 20-35 and 6-18 in the Big 12. 

But Nebraska finished fourth in the Big Ten and went 33-21-1 and 15-9 in conference. While both teams have re-worked their rosters, Nebraska made a major change in the dugout. 

No, Will Bolt didn’t leave the program, but he did bring in former Nebraska pitching coach Rob Childress. 

Childress returned to Nebraska Baseball, where he coached from 1998 to 2005. Then he became the head coach of Texas A&M, who plays in the final weekend, where he won 622 games and went to the College Baseball World Series twice. 

Childress has guided 79 pitchers to the Majors, and since 2000 he has had eight teams finish in the top 15 of team ERA nationally. When he was the pitching coach at Nebraska, the Cornhuskers went to three College World Series. 

For Baylor, Thompson is looking to see his team take a step in the right direction. As the head coach of McLennan Community College from 2014-2022, he saw gradual improvement from year one to year two and even reached the NJCAA World Series that season in 2015. 

Oregon Baseball Vs. Oklahoma Baseball: Will Grayson Grinsell Start For The Ducks?

It’s the beginning of the end for both programs in their respective conferences. Oregon Baseball will join the Big Ten in 2025. Oklahoma will join the SEC the same year. 

Oregon went 41-22 and 16-14 in the Pac-12 in 2023 before winning the Pac-12 Tournament. The Ducks reached the Super Regionals before losing to Oral Roberts. Oregon saw six players from that team get drafted in July. 

Oklahoma went 32-28 and 11-13 in the Big 12. They made the tournament, but didn’t advance out of the Charlottesville Regional. 

Oregon is picked to finish fourth in the Pac-12, while Oklahoma was picked to finish tied for sixth-place. 

The Ducks are led by a pair of preseason All-Pac-12 pitchers in Logan Mercado and Grayson Grinsell. Mercado, a senior, is a veteran pitcher who has 12 starts the last three seasons. He was 5-1 with a 5.95 ERA for the Ducks, but he really excelled out of the bullpen. 

Grinsell had a strong freshman season and made three postseason starts after pitching out of the bullpen in the regular season. He had a 2.42 ERA in Pac-12 play. 

Tennessee Baseball Vs. Texas Tech Baseball: Will Drew Beam Start For Vols?

Tennessee Baseball are the highest-ranked team in the field for the first weekend and they feature the highest-graded prospect. Drew Beam is the No. 24-ranked prospect, according to Baseball America. Whether Tennessee pitches him against No. 22 Texas Tech is the bigger question. The Vols play Oklahoma and Baylor in the following days, but Tech is certainly the biggest challenge of the weekend. 

Texas Tech Baseball features the No. 47-ranked prospect at MLB.com in Kevin Bazzell and the Beam-Bazzell matchup would be one for scouts to watch. 

Beam has made 32 starts in two seasons and carries a 3.20 ERA and a 22.5 percent strikeout rate. His off-speed pitches make him a standout prospect. 

Tennessee could also opt for 6-foot-6 A.J. Russell, who Baseball America ranks as the No. 26 prospect in the 2025 draft class. Wichita State transfer Nate Snead is also the No. 63-ranked prospect in 2025. He had a 3.16 ERA in 42.2 innings.
