Florida Collegiate Summer League MLB Draft Roundup: Those Drafted From FCSL

Dreams officially have been realized.

This week, 22 players who have been a part of a Florida Collegiate Summer League roster at some point in their college baseball careers were selected in the 2023 MLB Draft, including multiple national championship-winning contributors and a standout who was picked higher than any FCSL alum in history.

Here’s a look at the players from the FCSL who got their names called by a major-league organization – with some brief breakdowns of the top prospects – along with what team(s) they starred for in the summer:

Dylan Crews, OF, LSU (Sanford River Rats) - Round 1, Pick 2, Washington Nationals

Yep, one of the most highly regarded outfield prospects (ever) and a five-tool superstar with national champion LSU, played two summers in the FCSL, before taking the college baseball world by storm this past season and winning the Golden Spikes Award in the process.

Playing in 2020 and 2021 with the River Rats, who won the league title in the former season, Crews suited up in 20 games overall and batted .295 with a pair of home runs and 10 RBIs.

He built off that work to become the best non-pitcher in the country this spring, and he earned the right to be called the FCSL’s all-time highest draft pick.

Gavin Dugas, 2B, LSU (Sanford River Rats) - Round 6, Pick 165, Washington Nationals

Dugas and Crews have been teammates in both college and the FCSL, and they’ll now get to be together at the pro level, too.

Dugas was on the inactive list for essentially all of his time in the Sunshine State in 2021 and didn’t play a game that summer, but the five-year Tiger was imperative to LSU’s run to a national title this season, earning a spot on the Men’s College World Series All-Tournament Team. He hit .308 in Omaha with two doubles, two homers and four RBIs.

He also was the mighty Southeastern Conference’s RBI leader for the 2021 campaign, driving in 66.

Braden Barry, OF, West Virginia (Seminole County Loggerheads) - Round 8, Pick 244, Toronto Blue Jays

Before being named to the All-Big 12 second team this past season with the Mountaineers, Barry, a Kentucky native, tried out summer ball in the FCSL at the age of just 18.

He played with the Loggerheads (no longer in the league), holding his own against players much older and more experienced. He batted .184 with a pair of RBIs and five runs in 17 games in 2020.

He’s only been getting better since, with his last stop before the draft being with the West Virginia Black Bears of the MLB Draft League. His time there ended with a .346 average across seven games.
